Have You Seen a Studio Like This?

My studio space isn’t something I ever planned to have. I started out with a gallery near Brisbane, and after three years, the landlord decided not re-new my lease. Ouch! It was a blow... I spent a lot, arguably a small fortune, in borrowed money to setup the gallery and had just finished paying it off. I couldn’t have the same thing happen again so my partner said, "Let's just build one on our property."

Initially, I thought this was a terrible idea, but I slowly came to terms with the pros versus the cons. If I truly wanted to do what I love and in a space that felt right for allowing my creativity to be free-flowing -- Ultimately, that's what I needed.

We started building the space out of a shipping container, but we learned quickly that satisfying the building council wasn't easy. The paperwork just kept coming. So my partner asked, "Why don’t we just build a shed?"

Just when I got over the idea of having my studio from home and not a shopfront; Now, I had to re-envision this opportunity as a shed. It didn't feel right at first, but the opportunity to continue my work was motivating.
I decided to explore options, and I found a shed company that helped me envision my ideal creative space. We added as many windows as we structurally could with big doors that open to the garden and a second floor that allows separation from my administrative work and my creative studio.

The shed company did all the paperwork, which was a relief in many ways. The project wasn't drama-free, but we persisted. Finally, my partner and I worked together fitting out with walls, insulation and well you see the rest…

When people visit, they are often drawn to the shed and are envious of the big open space and the freedom of light and air. There's no limit to the size of creation that I can venture. I'm truly grateful for it, including the journey to the studio's inception. It's all about being open-minded to re-envisioning, setting intention, and allowing the idea to take form.
